Unearthed haunting gem from the early 90s

Originally released in 1991, T.A.L.E.S. is the first and only album by Edmonton’s Zions Abyss whose style recalls the classy power-metal-with-a-hint-of-prog of Queensryche’s first two albums (the self-titled EP and WARNING). Sanctuary, Early Metal Church and KD also come to mind. Vocalist Klaus Whissel has a unique commanding and haunting sound with elements of metal’s best, like Geoff Tate, Warrel Dane, KD and Klaus Meine, not that he sounds like any of these.

The band formed in 1990 from the ashes of Winterkill, quickly composed & recorded this album, and then toured the Western Canada club circuit for five years until the unfortunate death of guitarist/main writer Andy Waitkus in an auto accident. This album never got the attention & circulation it deserved back in the early 90s – no doubt due to the advent of grunge – and therefore too few metal fans knew it even existed. Thankfully, the fine folks at Steel Legacy Records rereleased it in 2006, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this.

The album starts off with an organ-oriented gothic intro. Favorite tracks include: The biting “Final Command,” the haunting “Darkest Dream,” the eerily moving “Scarred for Life,” the atmospheric-turned-galloping “Changing Sands,” the formidable “Mercenary,” the poignant epic “Forever Alive” and the sweet classical flamenco-styled closing instrumental “Serenity.” Really, the whole album’s consistent and classy from beginning to end. Too bad they never released a sequel, but at least we have this.
