Album

Direct is a studio album by the Greek electronic composer Vangelis, released in 1988. The album marks a new development in Vangelis' music, during which Vangelis moved his creative base from London to Athens in Greece, and it was his first album recorded in Athens after relocation from London. According to the album sleeve notes the album and its title are inspired by Vangelis' method of composing and recording, relying on spontaneity, with the compositional and recording process occurring. The CD release of Direct includes bonus material - which fits the flow of this intense and dramatic offering - not included on the cassette or vinyl releases. Like most Vangelis, this defies categorization. It has strong elements of rock & roll, symphonic synth ambience, and new age instrumental aspects. At the same time, the bold synthesizer strokes and washes fit the Berlin school of electronica. Given Vangelis' proclivity for soundtrack work, it is no surprise that this disc sounds like great film music. LP 12 album, 33 rpm. Vangelis Format: Audio CD. Please retry. Show details. This is an album with a strong set of songs/melodies. Measured against his other works this suffers from late '80s preset synthesiser patch 'ageing', having a bit of a cheesy whiff about it. A shame. The album also tails off somewhat, with the only dislikable track (11) due to a dominant but clumsy cello synth line. By contrast the harp on 'Oracle..' is well realised.
Vangelis would return to celestially inspired music later, gaining better musical results and plaudits with 'Mythodea' and 'Rosetta'.
