The Grasshopper and the Ants is a Silly Symphony cartoon released on February 10, 1934. It is based on the classic fable The Ant and the Grasshopper. A grasshopper fiddles and plays through his day, tempting some of the worker ants to play with him, unaware that winter is coming and food will soon be scarce. Grasshopper voiced by Pinto Colvig. A Walt Disney Silly Symphony retelling of the classic fable about a foot race between speedy Max Hare, aka The Blue Streak, and Slow But Sure Toby Tortoise. Director: Wilfred Jackson. Stars: Eddie Holden, Ned Norton, Pinto Colvig. Winter comes, and the grasshopper, near starvation, stumbles across the ants, who are having a full-on feast in their snug little tree. They took him in and warmed him up. The queen tells him only those who work can eat so he must play for them. This is truly one of my favorite Disney Shorts. I had the record album and played it over and over and over when I was a child. I have tried to explain this story to my own sons who are 20 years old now and I could never quite capture the wonderful story, pictures and song. Oh how I wish I had kept my original vinyl. The ants get easily distracted by the grasshoppers fiddling, in a nice touch. It shows the audience that the work of the ants is not something they enjoy, but its still necessary. A Grasshopper frolicked while an Ant stored food for the winter. When winter came the Ant was comfortable the Grasshopper not so. A Grasshopper, who had chanced to outlive the summer, and was ready to starve with cold and hunger, approached them with great humility, and begged that they would relieve his necessity, with one grain of wheat or rye. One of the ants asked him, how he had disposed of his time in summer, that he had not taken pains, and laid in a stock, as they had done. Alas, Gentlemen, says he, I passed away the time merrily and pleasantly, in drinking, singing, and dancing, and never once thought of winter
