It has been well-received by music critics. Following the release of their first album Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, Sparklehorse embarked on a European tour opening for Radiohead, who praised Sparklehorse as their favorite new band. It was during this tour in 1996 that Mark Linkous suffered a near-fatal overdose that would have long-lasting effects on. Recorded after singersongwriter Mark Linkous' accidental, near-fatal drug reaction and subsequent 12-week stay in London's St. Mary's Hospital, Good Morning Spider dwells in the liminal spaces between dreaming and waking, sickness and health, and living and dying. The album takes these grey areas and makes a world out of them, blending classic songwriting with an experimental sound that borrows from hi-fi and lo-fi. Good Morning Spider, Sparklehorses second album after 1995s Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot, retains some of the punk rock fervor that pushed Linkous to both coasts in his late teens and early twenties. Pig is the closest Sparklehorse comes to a raw punk song, and Cruel Sun sees him shouting against the full lurch of multi-layered guitars. Happy Man, a song Linkous bisected with the ambient organ number Chaos of the Galaxy, could have been a pop punk chart-topper in a corporate producers hands.
