Shirley Elizabeth Collins MBE born 5 July 1935 is an English folk singer who was a significant contributor to the English Folk Revival of the 1960s and 1970s. She often performed and recorded with her sister Dolly, whose accompaniment on piano and portative organ created unique settings for Shirley's plain, austere singing style. Amaranth was originally recorded in 1976 to accompany a reissue of Shirley & Dolly Collins' acclaimed Anthems in Eden album. This follows the Collins, John Rodd Tracks 14 trad. When it was decided recently to reissue this album, I asked Harvest if they would allow me to record a new side to accompany the suite. This they agreed to. Ashley Hutchings was married to Shirley Collins and brought the band together as a backing group for Shirleys new album No Roses. Shirleys lovely untrained voice would have been drowned by a totally electric band and a lot of the band were specifically accoustic. The band included, Greg Butler later of Strawhead on Serpent, Richard Thompson on guitars, Ashley Hutchings on bass, Tim Renwick also on guitars. Also, among the backing s. Anthems in Eden is a 1969 album by Shirley and Dolly Collins, with the Early Music Consort of London, directed by David Munrow. The album originally consisted of a 28-minute set of folk songs plus 7 other individual pieces performed by the same group. The musical arrangements for these 8 pieces included early music instruments, such as viols, recorders, sackbuts and crumhorns. In 1976, 6 new songs were recorded with a different assortment of accompanists, to replace the original 7 individual songs. This 1976 album consisting of the 28-minute set plus the 6 new songs was released by Harvest Rec
