Album

Horn of Plenty is the debut studio album by American indie rock band Grizzly Bear, released on November 9, 2004 on Kanine. Primarily a solo album by founding member Edward Droste, the album also features contributions from future drummer Christopher Bear. In 2006, the band released an EP, Sorry for the Delay, featuring tracks recorded during the same time period. In 2005, a collection of remixes, Horn of Plenty The Remixes, was released. Grizzly Bear's debut offers up a lysergic brand of minimalist psychedelic folk perfect for those who find Elliott Smith's early work a bit too accessible and upbeat. Largely the home recording project of singersongwriter Ed Droste, Horn of Plenty was eventually augmented by multi-instrumentalist Christopher Bear. To these ends, the album features a mostly melancholy mix of acoustic guitars, reeds, retro organs, and samples, all drenched in enough acid-washed effects to give Devendra Banhart flashbacks. But Horn of Plenty proves that categorization would be neither fair nor accurate. The gentlemen of Grizzly Bear paw around in wholly distinct regions of gentle, nocturnal psych-folk, conjuring visions of an imagined bedroom collaboration between the Doug Yule-era Velvet Underground, Nick Drake, and a pajama-clad Pooh with his head jammed in a honey jar. Originally conceived by multi-talented singer-songwriter Edward Droste as solo demos, the recordings that became Horn of Plenty were later augmented by the additional vocals and instrumentation of Christopher Bear. Grizzly Bear released their debut collection, an album titled Horn of Plenty, in late 2004, but it wasnt until they got smooth on Yellow House that the hype machines really started to take notice. But Plenty is a great record in its own right, perhaps even a better one than Yellow House. Frontman Ed Drostes vocals are tired sounding, intimate and of the perfect indie rock tone. His band mates sound is a less refined, a folksy blend of indie rock and trippy pyschadelia, often times sounding like the late Elliot Smith with a rather crippling case of flu. Grizzly Bear Format: Audio CD. The lazy acoustic forplay on the album gives it a much different feel than the rest of the groups other releases which is nice. It gives the album that patented low-fi, 8-track in the bedroom feel all us 'hipsters' long for. But perhaps the greatest thing about Horn Of Plenty is the honesty found there in, the relatability we all long for in OUR music. Whether it be listening at home, in your car, or on the bus with a pair of head-phones, its music such as Grizzly Bears Horn Of Plenty that chooses you rather than you choosing it. Read more.
