The Piano Concerto No. 5 in E major, Op. 73, by Ludwig van Beethoven, popularly known as the Emperor Concerto, was his last completed piano concerto. It was written between 1809 and 1811 in Vienna, and was dedicated to Archduke Rudolf, Beethoven's patron and pupil. The first performance took place on 13 January 1811 at the Palace of Prince Joseph Lobkowitz in Vienna, with Archduke Rudolf as the soloist, followed by a public concert on 28 November 1811 at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig under conductor. Clemens Krauss conducts Wilhelm Backhaus and The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to Beethoven's Emperor Piano Concerto on this 1957 DeccaLXT 5355 Concerto No. This concerto was finalized in 1809, about the same time as the famous sonata Appasionata op. The powerful themes and heroic note of the composition, lead to the name Emperor for this concerto. The name Emperor dates from Beethovens time but was not given by Beethoven himself. After the introduction of the second theme, a dialogue is built up between the orchestra and the piano regarding the presented themes. The ending of the first movement renders the atmosphere given by the powerful rhythms and the ample sonorities of the ending of the first allegro in Symphony No. Album 2009 4 Songs. 73 The Emperor: II. The Concerto No. 5 is Beethoven's final essay in the concerto genre. He may have lost interest in concertante works at least in part because of his advancing deafness, which brought an end to his own career as a pianist. Tellingly, he himself never publicly played the Concerto No. 5, though he had written his four previous piano concerti for his own use on the concert stage. Moreover, the athletic, virtuoso ideal rarely fit the language of Beethoven's late works, even though some of the last piano sonatas are punishingly difficult. In the Piano Concerto No. 4, Beethoven made a striki. Performer: Wilhelm Backhaus. Orchestra: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Clemens Krauss. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven. The Emperor concerto is a bit more successful here than the 4, which is the reverse of the same couplings with ArrauHaitink and CurzonKnappertsbusch two of the best fourths ever, I believe. The Emperor here is noble, leonine and exciting. The second movement is unrushed and sufficiently. Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 in E Flat Op 73 II. Adagio un pozo mosso.
